VDT: Visual Design Thinking

The first public version of Visual Design Thinking, presented in Prague in September 2013 with Chiara Albanesi, illustrator, ethnographer and storyteller. The premise: getting to know the client is never lost time. We guide them into telling the story of their company, sketch while they talk and share the drawings, even asynchronously, because if storytelling is the oldest way to share information, sketching is the most immediate.

The talk takes the UX toolkit (stakeholder map, personas, user journey, touchpoints) and uses it for visual identity work too, so the style guide is co-designed with the client and tailored to their customers before any UI is drawn. One slide sums it up: "Stop designing for users. Design for their stories." It ends with a tongue-in-cheek list of who the method is not for, waterfall fans and price-per-page clients included, and a thank you to CoDesign Jam Rome and its mentor Cristiano Siri, where it all started. 28 slides, about 1,300 views on Slideshare.
