Firefox OS was right (and I was there)
... and I finally built the version I wanted.
Back to business, though. I believed something specific back then: that a phone could be made entirely of the web. Not a browser running on top of an OS, but the browser as the OS. No wall of icons.
You’d say what you wanted, and the device would reshape itself around it.I wasn’t inventing that belief; it was written into the product.
When Mozilla launched the first Firefox OS phones in 2013, the pitch already included an adaptive search that reshaped the phone around what you needed, plus the ability to spin up one-time apps on demand with no download required. Read that back in 2026 and it’s uncanny. Intent over icons. Apps summoned, not installed.
2014 - 2024: The revival

Last December 7th, 2014, Italy joined the other Firefox OS enabled countries, and we were proud of being part of the launch team (this is one of the most meaningful and symbolic “we” I could ever have imagined).
